Chinese Tech Titan WeRide Challenges Tesla with New ‘Global Robotaxi’ Service
WeRide, a Chinese self-driving technology firm, is accelerating its global expansion plans with ambitions to deploy hundreds of thousands of autonomous taxis worldwide. The company recently secured $307 million in a Hong Kong share sale to fuel its commercialization efforts and research and development. Founder and CEO Tony Han announced plans to roll out 10,000 robotaxis in the coming years, targeting markets in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Japan.
The MOVE intensifies competition with Tesla, Alphabet's Waymo, and XPeng in the autonomous vehicle sector. WeRide aims to establish itself as a ubiquitous global taxi service, leveraging its first-mover advantage in self-driving technology. Premium-level autonomous cars for high-end customers are also under development as part of the expansion strategy.
